FAQs

What is Dentistry?

To us, dentistry is caring. It’s caring for your dental needs, oral health and working to help you maintain a beautiful smile. At the office of Kim Rosen, DDS, our experienced team will go the extra mile to make sure your entire family feels completely comfortable at every appointment and gets the personalized care that they need! From children to adults, we take the time to find out what you need and work hard to meet those needs. We look at dentistry as a way to help our community one smile at a time!

Why is visiting the dentist so important?

Daily brushing and flossing is obviously important to your oral health, but it’s not quite enough! Regular visits to your dentist are critical because they give your dentist the ability to keep up on your dental needs and detect any warning signs of oral decay or infection. Dental check-ups can prevent tooth loss and tooth decay by catching problems when they are small and addressing them right away – before they turn into a dental emergency. In addition, one of our skilled hygienists can thoroughly clean your teeth to help remove any plaque buildup that daily brushing and flossing can’t reach. Your overall oral health benefits when you stay faithful to your dental visits!

How can I maintain a healthy smile in-between dental check-ups?

The best way to keep your smile healthy is to brush 2-3 times a day and floss daily! Although those things are basic, they are the most important! Brushing your tongue is also important as it will help cut down on the amount of bacteria in your mouth and keep your breath smelling fresh.

Avoid sugary foods, especially when you cannot brush your teeth immediately after eating. Save your sweet tooth for dinner or a meal when you can clean your teeth right away!

When should I schedule my child’s first visit to the dentist?

The best age is around 1 year’s old! By this time, they most likely will have some baby teeth and the dentist can check for any signs of concern. It will also give your little one an early start at the dentist and they won’t be as nervous at the dental office as they get older if they visit their dentist every 6 months starting at a young age!

How often should I visit the dentist?

We recommend visiting the dentist every 6 months! However, some patients may be advised to come more than twice a year if they need more extensive oral care.

What is a cavity?

When plaque builds up and sugars and starches also set on our teeth, cavities can form. A cavity is caused by a tooth decaying – resulting in a small hole in the tooth. If caught early, a cavity can be easily treated and can save the tooth from further decay, infection and even tooth loss. If a cavity isn’t treated right away, it can turn into a major oral issue and cause a lot of pain.

What is a filling?

When your dentist finds a cavity, the decay will be removed from the tooth. A filling will then be used to seal the tooth and fill in the cavity. Fillings can also be used in tooth bonding to fix a cracked, chipped or misshapen tooth. Fillings can be color-matched to your tooth, so they blend in with your smile!

How often should I brush my teeth?

Dr. Rosen recommends brushing 3 times a day in addition to flossing once a day. Don’t forget to brush your tongue as well! And don’t brush in a rush – take your time to make sure you thoroughly brush every tooth on the top and bottom! If you spend about 4 minutes brushing your teeth, you should be able carefully clean every tooth. Using fluoride-containing toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush is the best for your smile!

How often should I switch toothbrushes?

You should switch to a new toothbrush every 3 months. Electric toothbrushes may be different. The packaging should tell you the best time to switch. If you are sick, it’s best to change toothbrushes as soon as you are well! Hot water is recommended after every brushing to help keep your toothbrush clean.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease occurs if plaque and bacteria buildup is not treated soon enough. The first stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. Gingivitis is treatable and should be addressed before it turns into advanced gum disease. If gum disease advances, it can result in tooth loss. You can prevent gum disease by regular visits to your dentist!
Keep an eye out for the warning signs of gum disease:

  • Swollen, irritated or bleeding gums
  • Severe bad breath
  • Tooth loss
  • Extremely sensitive teeth
  • Tooth abscess
  • Gum recession

Is a regular 6-month checkup necessary if I have braces?

Yes! Regular checkups are definitely important when you have braces. Keeping your teeth clean when you have braces is critical so your teeth stay free from bacteria and infection. Brushing and flossing becomes much more difficult when you have braces, so thorough cleanings at your dentist are more important than ever!
